The 1987 Chevrolet El Camino belongs to the fifth and final generation (1978–1987). This was the last year the iconic “car-truck” hybrid was produced before being discontinued. Production had moved to Mexico in 1985, and only 13,743 units were built in 1987 — the lowest production year in El Camino history.

The 1987 model featured updated front-end styling while retaining the classic El Camino proportions and utility. It was the last year to offer the full-size spare tire mounted under the bed and the traditional swing-down tailgate design.
