2002 Pontiac Firebird Formula Coupe Collector’s Edition WS6 6-Speed Manual | Collector Yellow | 103k Original Miles | Clean Title

This is a very special final-year example of the iconic 4th-generation Firebird. Locally owned since new and locally maintained with a ton of service history! Finished in rare Collector Yellow with a black interior, this Formula Coupe features the desirable WS6 Ram Air Performance Package and a 6-speed manual transmission. It represents the end of an era for American muscle cars and one of the most collectible configurations from Pontiac’s final year of production.

The car was owned locally in the Atascadero area for most of its life. The second owner purchased it in 2009 with only 16,907 miles and maintained it meticulously, with every receipt kept in chronological order. The most recent major service was a new clutch performed by Rizzoli’s in Atascadero in December 2025 at 102,000 miles, costing $3,800. A minor cosmetic incident occurred in February 2026 when the rear passenger quarter panel was swiped in a parking lot; it was professionally repaired at Caliber Collision with supporting documentation. Although Carfax shows three owners due to a recent title transfer, this is effectively a two-owner vehicle — the second owner purchased the car in 2009 and maintained it until his passing. His widow is now listed as the third owner after transferring the title into her name. The car has a clean California title and 43 service records on file.

ALL RECEIPTS INCLUDED!

Powered by the 325-horsepower LS1 5.7L V8 paired with a 6-speed manual transmission. This is a solid car that was daily driven by its former owner with a ton of service history to back it up. They produced a total of 2,390 Collector Edition Firebirds- 1,351 Coupes & 1,039 Convertibles. Out of those 1351 Coupes built, only 842 came with the 6-speed manual transmission, making this a desirable bird. This ’02 Collectors Edition comes with two sets of keys, original owners manual, original sales brochure/print catalog, car cover, t-top sun shades, all service records from the second owner which are shown in the gallery,  and a Clean California title.  Don’t miss out- this won’t last long!

History of the Generation

The fourth-generation Pontiac Firebird was produced from 1993 through 2002. This generation marked a significant evolution with more aerodynamic styling, improved chassis rigidity, and — most importantly — the introduction of the all-aluminum LS1 V8 starting in 1998. The 2002 model year was the final year of Firebird production after 35 years. To commemorate the end of the nameplate, Pontiac offered the Collector’s Edition package on select models. These special-edition cars were finished in exclusive Collector Yellow paint and featured unique graphics and badging. While most Collector’s Editions were built as Trans Ams, the Formula Coupe WS6 version is significantly rarer and more desirable to enthusiasts.

Performance & Fuel Economy

This Firebird is powered by the legendary LS1 5.7-liter V8, rated at 325 horsepower at 5,200 rpm and 350 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm in WS6 form. The WS6 Ram Air system provides functional cold-air induction through the distinctive dual hood scoops, improving both power and sound. Paired with the Tremec 6-speed manual, this car delivers strong acceleration and excellent top-end pull while remaining surprisingly refined for daily driving.

Fuel economy is respectable for a high-performance V8 of this era. Expect approximately 16 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway when driven conservatively in sixth gear.

The Collector’s Edition Package

The 2002 Collector’s Edition was Pontiac’s special send-off for the Firebird in its final year. It featured an exclusive Collector Yellow paint color, dramatic full-length “Screaming Chicken” graphics that wrapped from the hood across the doors and onto the rear quarters, blacked-out headlight and taillight trim, and unique Collector’s Edition badging. On WS6-equipped cars, the package also included black-anodized brake calipers. While the mechanical performance was identical to a standard WS6, the visual and collectible appeal was significantly higher. Total Collector’s Edition production across all body styles was approximately 2,390 units. The Formula Coupe with the 6-speed manual is one of the rarer combinations, making this example particularly special among enthusiasts.

The Legendary LS1 Engine

The LS1 5.7L V8 is widely regarded as one of the greatest engines General Motors ever produced. Originally introduced in the C5 Corvette, it completely changed the perception of GM performance. Its all-aluminum construction, excellent breathing, and robust bottom end made it both powerful and reliable. The LS1 quickly earned a reputation as a “bulletproof” engine capable of handling massive power increases with basic modifications. It powered the Corvette, Camaro, and Firebird, and later influenced an entire generation of GM performance engines. The LS1 helped re-establish GM as a serious player in the modern performance world and remains one of the most popular and supported engines in the aftermarket today.

What the Experts Are Saying

  • Car and Driver: “The LS1-powered F-body cars finally gave GM a modern muscle car that could corner as well as it could go in a straight line. The WS6 package turned the Firebird into a legitimate performer that could embarrass far more expensive European machinery on a twisty road.”
  • Motor Trend: “Pontiac’s final Firebird was a fitting send-off. The LS1 V8 is smooth, powerful, and surprisingly efficient, while the WS6 suspension and brakes make this one of the best-handling American performance cars of its generation.”
  • Edmunds: “The 2002 Trans Am and Formula WS6 models represent the high-water mark for the F-body platform. With the LS1 engine and the Ram Air package, these cars offered supercar performance for muscle car money — and they remain highly desirable today.”

Final Thoughts

This 2002 Firebird Formula Coupe Collector’s Edition WS6 is a well-documented, locally owned example of one of the last great American muscle cars. With its rare Collector Yellow paint, exclusive graphics, desirable 6-speed manual, strong service history (including a recent $3,800 clutch service), and clean title, it offers both driving enjoyment and strong collector appeal. The legendary LS1 V8 has proven itself over decades as one of GM’s most reliable and tunable engines, and this final-year Collector’s Edition represents the pinnacle of the 4th-generation Firebird.

Serious inquiries are welcome. All service records and documentation from the second owner are available for review.

***Note on Carfax Ownership History:

Although Carfax lists three owners, this is a two-owner vehicle. The second owner purchased this Firebird in 2009 and maintained it until his recent passing. His widow is shown as the third owner only because she was required to transfer the title into her name following his passing. The car has remained in the same family since 2009, and all service records from the second owner are included and well-documented. Always maintained, and it shows!
