NHTSA Safety Ratings
When NHTSA crash-tested the 2003 Honda Pilot 4×4 four-door, it earned the federal program’s top marks in the tests that matter most to a family SUV. Honda’s own announcement at launch recorded five-star results for the driver, front passenger, and rear passengers in both the frontal barrier and side-impact programs. Period NHTSA tables for the 2003 Pilot 4×4 list:
- Frontal crash — Driver: ★★★★★
- Frontal crash — Passenger: ★★★★★
- Side crash — Driver: ★★★★★
- Side crash — Rear passenger: ★★★★★
- Rollover resistance: ★★★★
Those front- and side-impact scores put the first-year Pilot among a very small group of SUVs that achieved five-star results in every seating position NHTSA published for the test.

Generation History
The Pilot arrived for the 2003 model year as Honda’s first mid-size, three-row SUV built for the United States. It sat on the same global light-truck architecture as the Acura MDX, with a unibody structure, four-wheel independent suspension, and Honda’s Variable Torque Management 4-wheel-drive system rather than a body-on-frame truck layout. Production of this first generation ran through 2008. The 2003 Pilot was the launch year — eight-passenger seating from day one, a 106.3-inch wheelbase, 188.0 inches overall, and 90.3 cubic feet of cargo with the second and third rows folded. Honda positioned it between the compact CR-V and the larger, more truck-like competitors then dominating American driveways. A mid-cycle refresh came later in the generation; the 2003–2004 trucks are the original design, original interior, and original 240-horse J35. This EX-L is that first-year Pilot in the leather, heated-seat, moonroof specification Honda sold as the top of the range.
Fuel Economy, Horsepower, and Torque
Every 2003 Pilot used one engine and one transmission. The 3.5-liter SOHC 24-valve VTEC V6 is rated at 240 horsepower at 5,400 rpm and 242 lb-ft of torque at 4,500 rpm, with a 10.0:1 compression ratio and multi-point fuel injection. The factory pairing is Honda’s 5-speed automatic with Grade Logic Control and a 4.428 final drive. Honda’s published 2003 EPA figures for the AWD Pilot were 17 mpg city / 22 mpg highway. Current fueleconomy.gov labels, which use the later test cycle, list the same powertrain at 15 city / 21 highway and 17 combined. Fuel tank capacity is 19.2 gallons. Tow ratings in Honda’s 2003 specification sheet are 3,500 pounds for a trailer and 4,500 pounds for a boat. Car and Driver’s instrumented 2003 Pilot EX recorded 0–60 mph in 8.1 seconds and the quarter-mile in 16.3 seconds at 85 mph — numbers Honda expected to lead the mid-size crossover class at introduction.
The 3.5-Liter V6 VTEC
This is Honda’s J35 family — the same basic SOHC VTEC V6 architecture that went into the Honda Odyssey, Honda Accord V6, Acura MDX, Acura TL, and Acura CL of the same era. Aluminum block and heads, 24 valves, three-rocker VTEC, and a reputation across those nameplates for smooth mid-range torque and long service life when maintained. In the Pilot it is tuned for 240 horsepower and 242 lb-ft, which is the same output Honda gave the first-generation MDX. The 5-speed automatic was the step up from the 4-speed units used in earlier Honda trucks and minivans, with Grade Logic holding a lower gear on descents. First-generation Pilots were designed around this one powertrain; there was no four-cylinder and no V8. Buyers who already know Odyssey and MDX service histories are looking at the same engine family in a three-row SUV wrapper.
What Made the EX-L an EX-L
Honda launched the 2003 Pilot in LX and EX, with the leather-and-comfort package sold as EX with leather — the trim the market calls EX-L.
LX was the entry Pilot: cloth, manual climate, steel wheels or basic alloys depending on package, and the same 3.5 V6 / 5-speed / VTM-4 drivetrain.
EX added the comfort and convenience layer: alloy wheels, automatic climate control, body-color mirrors and moldings, power driver’s seat, and the higher audio package.
EX-L sat on top of EX. The “L” is leather. On the 2003 Pilot that meant gray or ivory leather seating surfaces, heated front seats, and a power moonroof. EX-L also carried the EX convenience list — automatic climate, power driver’s seat, alloys — so the cabin is the fully equipped first-year Pilot: leather, heat in the front seats, glass in the roof, three rows, and AWD. Optional on the upper trims was Honda’s rear-seat entertainment system. This example is the EX-L specification: Taffeta White over gray leather, AWD, 3rd row.
How It Stacked Up in 2003
The mid-size SUV class in 2003 was Ford Explorer, Chevrolet TrailBlazer, Toyota Highlander, Toyota 4Runner, Nissan Pathfinder, and the first-year Pilot and MDX. Most of those nameplates were body-on-frame trucks. The Pilot and Highlander were the unibody crossovers with car-like ride and three-row packaging. Against the Explorer and TrailBlazer the Pilot offered independent rear suspension, a car-based unibody, and Honda’s five-star NCAP set. Against the Highlander it offered a third row that seated adults more credibly and a V6 that Honda rated among the strongest in the segment. Car and Driver’s comparison notes of the period put the Pilot’s 8.1-second 0–60 ahead of the lighter Highlander they tested and within a tenth or two of the more powerful TrailBlazer. Cabin volume was a Honda talking point: 176.9 cubic feet of passenger space and 90.3 cubic feet of cargo with the rear rows down. The Pilot did not pretend to be a rock-crawler. It was sold as the family Honda that towed 3,500 pounds and seated eight with AWD.
What the Experts Said
- Motor Trend — First-drive coverage of the 2003 Pilot called out supportive seats, abundant small-item storage, and Honda material quality as class strengths, and treated the Pilot as the practical three-row Honda rather than a re-badged truck.
- Edmunds — “The 2003 Honda Pilot is one of the best crossover SUVs in just its first year out. An excellent choice for active families in need of versatility.” Edmunds’ period review put the first-year Pilot at the front of the new crossover group on packaging, drivetrain, and day-to-day use.
- Car and Driver (instrumented EX test) — Recorded 8.1 seconds to 60 mph and 16.3 seconds in the quarter-mile at 85 mph. Noted five-star frontal and side NCAP ratings and the 240-hp / 242-lb-ft J-series V6 shared with the MDX. Observed fuel economy on their test loop was 15 mpg against the 17/22 EPA label.
- Kelley Blue Book — Listed the 2003 Pilot as a three-row mid-size Honda with the 240-hp 3.5 V6 across the range and treated EX-L equipment (leather, heated seats, moonroof) as the specification families actually shopped.
