NHTSA Safety Ratings

Stars are the 2012 NCAP scores for this generation. They are not a substitute for a pre-purchase inspection.

  • Overall: ★★★★☆ (4 stars)
  • Frontal crash: ★★★★☆ (4) — driver 4, passenger 4
  • Side crash: ★★★★★ (5)
  • Side pole: ★★☆☆☆ (2)
  • Rollover: ★★★★☆ (4)

IIHS (ratings carry across 2006–2012 on the tests they ran): moderate-overlap front Good, side Good, rear/head restraints Good, roof strength Acceptable. Small-overlap was not tested on this generation. No modern Toyota Safety Sense suite — this is a 2012 Base.

History of the Generation

This is the third-generation RAV4 (XA30), built for 2006–2012. Toyota stretched the old two-door-era RAV into a proper five-passenger compact SUV with a longer wheelbase, a third row on some trims, and a choice of a 2.5-liter four-cylinder or 3.5-liter V6. 2009 brought a mid-cycle refresh (fascia, interior bits). 2012 is the last model year before the 2013 XA40 redesign — new body, more car-like ride, and eventually the 2.5 that led into the hybrid era. If you want the square, high-visibility, “old Toyota truck-lite” RAV with the 2AZ-family four and a simple 4-speed, this is the final year they sold it.

Fuel Economy, Horsepower, and Torque

Factory 2.5-liter 2AZ-FE inline-four, dual VVT-i: 179 hp at 6,000 rpm, 172 lb-ft at 4,000 rpm. Four-speed ECT automatic. EPA for the 2WD 4-cylinder: 21 city / 28 highway / 24 combined (Toyota window cards of the period often listed 22/28). Regular 87 octane. Tow rating on the four-cylinder RAV4 of this era is modest — think small trailer, not a boat. The four-speed is dated next to later 6-speeds; it is also simple, cheap to service, and already proven on this mileage. Expect mid-20s in mixed California driving if it is maintained.

Engine and Reliability

The 2.5 2AZ-FE is the everyday Toyota four of that era — timing chain, not a belt. It is the engine most RAV4s of this generation left the lot with. It will not feel like the optional 269-hp V6. It will start, idle, and run if oil changes were done, which this Carfax says they were — 26 records, Roseville Toyota.

Base 2WD versus the rest of the lineup

Base 2WD is the lightest, simplest 2012 RAV4: four-cylinder, front drive, cloth, steel wheels on most Bases, no requirement to pay for Sport cladding or Limited leather and extra screens. You do not get the V6’s 0–60 or the 4WD clutch pack. You get lower curb weight, the best EPA number in the gas lineup, and fewer parts to age. Sport added looks and some equipment. Limited added comfort and price. This one is the commuter spec — which is why a 55k-mile Base is the example people look for and almost never find.

Mileage — why 55,000 on a 2012 matters

A 2012 RAV4 in 2026 is fourteen years old. Average use is roughly 12,000 miles a year. That would put a normal truck near 160,000–180,000. This one shows 55,000 original miles — about 3,900 miles a year. That is not “low for the year.” That is almost unused by compact-SUV standards. Third-gen RAV4s that survived are usually high-mile family tools with faded cloth and a tired 4-speed. A one-owner, no-accident, Roseville-dealer-serviced 55k Base in Super White is the opposite of that market. You can find 2012 RAV4s. You cannot casually find this mileage with this paper.

How it stacked up against the competition

In 2012 the compact-crossover fight was Honda CR-V, Ford Escape, Chevy Equinox, Nissan Rogue, Hyundai Tucson / Kia Sportage, and the incoming Mazda CX-5. The RAV4 won on Toyota resale and the optional V6 (class-fast). It lost on interior age and on four-cylinder fuel economy versus the newer 6-speed Hondas. The CR-V was the more polished daily. The Escape of that moment was a mixed bag. The RAV4’s argument was: it will still be here in 150,000 miles. This example is what that argument looks like when someone barely used the miles.

What the experts said

Edmunds called the 2012 RAV4 competent — weather, cargo, visibility — and called the base four-plus-four-speed a disappointment next to the V6 and next to newer rivals’ economy. They still ranked the package as a practical used compact SUV if you wanted Toyota’s service network more than a modern cabin.

Motor Trend said the 179-hp 2.5 and four-speed were adequate for normal use, pointed buyers who haul people and cargo toward the V6, and flagged a dated interior and pricey options. They listed spacious packaging and the V6 as strengths. This Base is the truck they called “adequate,” not the one they called quick.

Kelley Blue Book / period buyer guides treated the RAV4 as a resale and reliability play: high predicted ownership scores, strong used demand, cabin and 4-speed as the knocks. That is still how this generation trades.

Car and Driver (generation coverage) treated the XA30 as the boxy, useful RAV — especially with the V6 — and as the last of the simple trucks before the 2013 car-crossover rewrite.
