The Generation
Toyota built the second-generation Tacoma from 2005 through 2015. It replaced the first-generation truck, which had run since 1995, and it was the first full redesign in ten years. The 2005 was wider, longer, and taller in the cabin than the truck it replaced. The double cab used a short bed, about five feet, with a composite inner bed, steel outer panels, rail caps, and a removable tailgate deck rail with tie-down cleats. Regular cab, Access Cab, and Double Cab were offered, in 2WD and 4WD. The Prerunner is the 2WD truck with the raised stance, overfenders, and the look of the off-road model. Production of this body ran a full decade, which is why the 2005 still reads as the modern Tacoma rather than the narrow truck that came before it.

Power and Fuel Economy
The engine on the build sheet is the 245-horsepower 4.0L DOHC 24-valve V6 with VVT-i. Output is 245 horsepower at 5,200 rpm and 282 lb-ft of torque at 3,800 rpm. That was a 29 percent gain over the 190-horsepower 3.4L V6 in the previous Tacoma, and it is the same 1GR-FE family used in the 4Runner. The transmission is the 5-speed ECT-i automatic. EPA figures for the 4.0L V6 automatic were 18 city and 22 highway. The tank is 21 gallons. The factory sheet also lists a coil-over double-wishbone front suspension, a multi-leaf rear, a front stabilizer bar, power rack-and-pinion steering, and power front discs with rear drums.

First Year, and Truck of the Year
2005 was the debut year of this generation, and Motor Trend named the Tacoma its 2005 Truck of the Year. The award covered the new body, the new frame with a fully boxed front section, and the 4.0L V6. Motor Trend’s line on the winner was that Toyota was doing the right things, and doing them right. The magazine also noted the cabin was taller and the truck was roughly five and a half inches longer than the year before, with the V6 making nearly as much power as the supercharged 3.4L of the outgoing truck. A 2005 is the first year of that run.

What the SR5 Prerunner Came With
The factory sheet lists the SJ SR5 package: a number 8 limited-slip differential, a Class 4 hitch, transmission and supplemental oil coolers, a heavy-duty battery, a 130-amp alternator, a 7-pin connector with a converter, 16-inch alloy wheels with P245/75R16 tires, fog lamps, remote keyless entry, cruise control, and variable intermittent wipers. It also lists a chrome grille surround and rear bumper, a color-keyed front bumper and overfenders, and a sliding rear window with privacy glass. The C7 convenience package added a front skid plate, a spare-tire lock, a Valor exhaust tip, and running boards. Carpet floor mats were installed at the port. Inside, the sheet lists metallic-tone instrument-panel trim, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, sun visors with mirrors and extenders, SR5 cloth buckets with a pass-through and driver lumbar, a 60/40 split rear bench, air conditioning, power windows, locks, and mirrors, an AM/FM/CD with six speakers, and a tilt-and-telescoping wheel. The gauges are LED-illuminated. Safety equipment on the sheet includes four-wheel ABS with electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist, dual-stage front airbags with an occupant classification system, three-point belts with pretensioners, and side-door impact beams.

How It Stood Against the Field
The 2005 compact-truck class had just been reset. Chevrolet and GMC had the new Colorado and Canyon. Dodge had a new Dakota. Nissan had a new Frontier. Ford was still on the Ranger. The Tacoma was the one Motor Trend put at the top of that group. The 4.0L V6 gave it 245 horsepower, ahead of the four-cylinder trucks and level with the strongest V6 rivals, and the double cab was the configuration buyers were moving to. The Prerunner gave 2WD buyers the stance, the alloys, the overfenders, and the hitch without the transfer case. That combination is what separated an SR5 Prerunner from a base 2WD work truck.

What the Press Wrote
- Motor Trend named it 2005 Truck of the Year and wrote that Toyota was doing the right things, and doing them right. The test notes cite the 245-horsepower V6, the stiffer frame, and the larger cabin.
- Truck Trend’s road test called the new Tacoma the standard in a segment that had gone flat, and paired the 4.0L with the 4Runner’s engine family at 245 horsepower and 282 lb-ft.
- Period buyer guides from Edmunds and Kelley Blue Book listed the double-cab V6 as the configuration that brought the Tacoma in line with the new Frontier and Colorado on room and power, with the SR5 adding the alloys, fog lamps, cruise, and keyless entry over the base truck.
