The Generation
Toyota built the third-generation RAV4 from 2006 through 2012. It replaced the second generation, which had run from 2001 to 2005, and it was a larger, more car-like crossover than the truck it followed. The wheelbase grew, the body grew, and a third-row seat became available on some models. The 2006 launch brought the 3.5-liter V6 as the optional engine. A refresh arrived for 2009, with a revised front end, a revised crash structure, and a new 2.5-liter four-cylinder in place of the old 2.4. The V6 carried on. Production of this body ended with the 2012 model. The 2013 fourth generation dropped the V6.

Power and Fuel Economy
The engine is the 3.5-liter 2GR-FE V6, 269 horsepower at 6,200 rpm and 246 lb-ft at 4,700 rpm, paired to a five-speed automatic. That was the same V6 family used in the Camry and the Avalon, in a lighter crossover. Edmunds timed a V6 all-wheel-drive RAV4 at 7.2 seconds to 60. EPA figures for the V6 were 19 city and 26 to 27 highway, 22 combined on front-drive, with all-wheel drive costing about 1 mpg on the highway. The tank is 15.9 gallons. The four-cylinder that year made 179 horsepower. The V6 is the one people still look for.

The Last V6, and the Following It Built
This was the last RAV4 generation sold with a V6 in the United States. After 2012, Toyota went to a four-cylinder only, and the V6 trucks picked up a following they did not have when they were new. The appeal is the power in a compact body. A 269-horsepower crossover that runs with cars from the same era, with all-wheel drive and a locking center split for snow, is a different drive from the four-cylinder RAV4s that followed. Against the 2009 field, the Honda CR-V, Ford Escape, and Chevrolet Equinox, the V6 RAV4 was the quick one. Car and Driver called the V6 model a rocket and noted it would outrun some sports sedans of the day. The four-cylinder competitors were the volume choice. The V6 was the one that made the class interesting.

What the Sport Was
The 2009 RAV4 came as a base, a Sport, and a Limited. The base was the stripper: steel wheels with covers, fewer interior pieces, the four-cylinder unless the V6 was ordered. The Limited was the top: leather, heated seats, a quieter equipment list, the luxury end of the same body. The Sport sat between them. It took the 18-inch alloy wheels, a sport-tuned suspension, fog lamps, a color-keyed grille treatment, color-keyed mirrors and door handles, and sport cloth seats. The V6 and all-wheel drive were optional on the Sport and are both on this one. It is the driver’s trim of the generation, not the base and not the leather Limited.

Under 100,000 Miles
A third-generation Sport, all-wheel drive, with the V6, and under 100,000 miles, is a thin slice of what was built. Most of these have been daily drivers for fifteen years. The ones that surface are usually well past 150,000. This one has 89,000, 26 service records, and a clean title. That combination is what makes a 2009 Sport V6 worth a look when a later four-cylinder is easier to find.

What the Experts Said
- Edmunds called the 2009 RAV4 a top pick in the class, and singled out the V6 for power and fuel economy. Pros listed were the V6, the ride and handling, the second-row room, the low cargo floor, and the crash scores. They timed the V6 all-wheel-drive model at 7.2 seconds to 60.
- Car and Driver had already given the RAV4 a comparison-test win and back-to-back 5Best Trucks awards. The 2009 write-up called the V6 a serious 269 horsepower and said it would outrun some sports sedans. The verdict was that the RAV4 led the class on space, economy, and the way it drove.
- Kelley Blue Book scored the 2009 RAV4 at the top of the compact-crossover group for that year, citing the available V6, the cargo room, and the resale. The Sport was the recommended step up from the base for buyers who wanted the wheels and the suspension without the Limited’s leather.
- Motor Trend’s coverage of the third generation treated the V6 as the engine that separated the RAV4 from the Honda CR-V and the Ford Escape. The 269-horsepower six, in a body that still returned mid-20s on the highway, was the line they kept coming back to.
