The Generation

Honda built the fourth-generation CR-V from 2012 through 2016. It replaced the third generation, which had run from 2007 through 2011. The 2012 was a new body, a new interior, and the first CR-V with Eco Assist and a rearview camera on the EX. Real Time all-wheel drive used a new intelligent-control system that could send power rearward before the front wheels slipped. LX, EX, and EX-L were the trims. The generation ran five model years. A 2012 is the first of them.

Power and Fuel Economy

The engine is the 2.4L inline-four with i-VTEC. Honda rated the 2012 at 185 horsepower at 7,000 rpm and 163 lb-ft of torque at 4,400 rpm. The transmission is a 5-speed automatic. EPA figures for the AWD automatic are 22 city, 30 highway, and 25 combined. The tank is 15.3 gallons, and the fuel is regular unleaded. Front-wheel drive was rated 23 city and 31 highway. The AWD gives up one mile per gallon on each cycle.

The 2.4L VTEC 4-Cylinder

The 2.4L is the K-series four Honda used in the CR-V from the second generation on. The first CR-V used a 2.0L. From 2002 forward, the 2.4L was the engine: aluminum block and head, dual overhead cams, 16 valves, i-VTEC, and a timing chain. The same layout was in the Accord and the Element. For 2012 Honda carried it into the new body at 185 horsepower, with drive-by-wire and Eco Assist. One engine, no optional V6, and the same basic design that had already been in CR-Vs for a decade.

First Year, Low Miles, All-Wheel Drive

A 2012 is the opening year of the generation that ran through 2016. This one has 99,000 miles, which is low for a truck that is more than a decade old, and it has one owner on the Carfax. The EX

The EX sat between the LX and the EX-L. Over the LX it added 17-inch alloy wheels, a power moonroof, a rearview camera, Bluetooth, a USB port, and steering-wheel audio controls. The EX-L added leather and heated seats. This truck is the cloth EX, gray, with the moonroof and the camera and without the leather. Cargo volume is 37.2 cubic feet behind the rear seat and 70.9 cubic feet with the seat folded. Seating is for five. Honda’s AWD system on this year is the intelligent-control Real Time setup, with hill-start assist standard.

How It Stood Against the Field

The 2012 compact-crossover class was the Toyota RAV4, the Ford Escape, the Chevrolet Equinox, the Hyundai Tucson, and the Subaru Forester. The Escape was new that year. The RAV4 was in its last year before its own redesign. The CR-V arrived as a full redesign with 185 horsepower, 30 highway on the AWD, and a five-star NHTSA overall score. It was the volume leader in the class. The AWD EX was the specification that matched the Forester on all-weather use and kept the Honda service record.
