The Generation
Honda built the fourth-generation Odyssey from 2011 through 2017. It replaced the third generation, which had run from 2005 to 2010, and it kept the sliding-door, three-row layout that had made the Odyssey the family van of the previous decade. The 2011 redesign brought a revised 3.5-liter V6, a six-speed automatic in place of the old five-speed, and a cabin built around the second-row Magic Seat and a fold-into-the-floor third row. A mild refresh arrived for 2014. The 2016 model year added an SE trim between the EX and the EX-L and otherwise carried the same van forward. Production of this body ended with the 2017 model. The fifth generation arrived for 2018.

Power and Fuel Economy
The engine is the 3.5-liter SOHC i-VTEC V6, 248 horsepower at 5,700 rpm and 250 lb-ft at 4,800 rpm, paired to a six-speed automatic and front-wheel drive. Variable Cylinder Management shuts three cylinders down on light throttle. EPA figures for the 2016 Odyssey were 19 city, 28 highway, and 22 to 23 combined. The tank is 21 gallons. Car and Driver noted the van could cover 500 miles or more on a tank. Towing is rated at 3,500 pounds.

The EX-L, With the DVD Rear Screen
The 2016 Odyssey ran from LX to Touring Elite. The LX was the cloth, manual-door van. The EX added power sliding doors, a tri-zone climate system, and alloy wheels. The EX-L was the step into leather. It brought heated front seats, a power tailgate, a sunroof, leather on the first and second rows. The rear entertainment system was a separate option, a 9-inch screen for the second row with a DVD player, headphones, and a remote. That package is what separated an EX-L from a plain EX-L, and it is the equipment a family van gets used for.

Against the Competition
In 2016 the minivan class was the Toyota Sienna, the Chrysler Town & Country, the Dodge Grand Caravan, and the Kia Sedona. The Sienna was the other long-running choice and the only one with available all-wheel drive. The Chrysler and Dodge were the value vans, with Stow ’n Go seats and a lower price. The Sedona was newer and quieter than its reputation. The Odyssey was the one the magazines kept at the front of that group. Edmunds called it one of the best minivans on the market. The case was the V6, the second-row seat that slides and comes out, the third row that folds into the floor, and the way it drove for a 4,500-pound van. This EX-L sits in the middle of that lineup, leather and the family options, short of the Touring Elite.

What the Experts Said
- Edmunds called the 2016 Odyssey one of the best minivans on the market. The pros they listed were the fuel-efficient V6, the quiet cabin, the configurable second row, the easy-fold third row, the crash scores, and the handling. EPA figures they cited were 19 city and 28 highway.
- Car and Driver’s 2016 quick take called it the van for a family that actually travels. They noted the EX-L as the point where the power tailgate, the sunroof, and the heated leather seats arrived, and they liked the sightlines, the ride, and the lack of body roll for the size. The verdict was the right vehicle for a family on the move.
- Kelley Blue Book ranked the 2016 Odyssey at the top of the minivan class for that year, citing the V6, the interior room, and the resale. The EX-L was the trim they pointed buyers to when leather and the power doors mattered and the Touring Elite was more van than they needed.
- Motor Trend’s coverage of the fourth generation treated the Odyssey as the benchmark the Sienna and the Town & Country were measured against. The 248-horsepower V6, the six-speed, and the fold-flat third row were the pieces they kept coming back to.
